Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE)

This appliance is typically used to widen the upper jaw (maxilla) of a younger patient. It is attached to the teeth, therefore not removable by the patient. The orthodontist determines the frequency and quantity of the turns, which are done by the parents at home.

Fixed Lower Expander (FLE)
This appliance is used to broaden the lower teeth. It is attached to the teeth, therefore not removable by the patient. The orthodontist determines the frequency and quantity of the turns, which are done by the parents at home.

Pendulum Appliance
The Pendulum appliance is custom made to the upper jaw. It is used to move the upper molars backwards, similar to the effects of headgear. It allows the orthodontist to correct the upper molar position and gain arch length, helping avoid permanent tooth extractions. It is not removable by the patient, and is typically worn for 4-6 months.
T-Rex Appliance
This appliance is a combination of the Pendulum and the Rapid Palatal Expander. It has the ability to widen the upper jaw, and move the upper molars backwards. It allows the orthodontist to gain room in both the transverse (width) and anterior-posterior (front-back) dimensions. This appliance is not removable by the patient, and is typically worn for 4-8 months.

Herbst Appliances
This appliance is attached to both the upper and lower teeth. It is used for correcting the relationship of the upper jaw to the lower jaw. It is particularly useful for lower jaw asymmetry and when the lower jaw is significantly positioned backwards. It provides the patient with an “unlocked” opportunity for lower jaw growth as well as a substantial headgear effect to the upper molars. It is not removable by the patient and is typically worn for 12-18 months.
